What's it really like ? Transfer time: Approx 15 minutes Location: Puerto del Carmen is Lanzarote's largest resort, spread over 3km and comparisons with the likes of Blackpool can't be avoided when you see the neon-lit frontage of shops along the beach road. For once however, that favourite brochure cliché, 'lively' is probably more apt than 'rowdy'. Young people come for the nightlife, to let their hair down, and are attracted by the abundance of bars on the front, but their behavior is rarely an issue. Just along from the main 'strip' there's a quieter haven where the old fishing harbour has survived along with a few traditional bars and restaurants. Back from the seafront the streets are generally wide and the buildings low with neatly landscaped grounds giving a spacious feel. Beaches: The resort's best feature; long, gently sloping and clean mid-tone sand with rows of sun loungers. Watersports include; windsurfing and scuba-diving. Drinks and snacks available along the front. Days out: Well-placed for trips around the island. Fire Mountain is a 'must see' along with the famous lava caves ( Cueva de los Verdes) which spread for miles underground. Also further up the coast; Costa Teguise has a water park and full size golf course. Shop-a-holics won't be disappointed with the quantity of local outlets. Nights out: Enough variety to suit everyone as long as you come with a 'live and let live' mentality. An area known as 'Centrico Atlantico' on the main coastal road is where the clubs and music bars are located. Meanwhile, if you pace the back streets and the harbour you'll find some of the more traditional restaurants with quite a varied choice of menu. Bucket and Spade Brigade: The beach is the obvious attraction for families, plus the choice of home-from-home amenities. For smaller ones the resort has a play area near the harbour. |
