What's it really like? Location: An action-packed resort with a strong American influence and very little authentic Mexican culture - it's hardly surprising because 30 years ago Cancún didn't exist. Magnificent hotels line the 14 mile strip of Cancún on the Caribbean side of Mexico which is more like a holiday playground than a peaceful retreat. This area is known locally as 'The Tourist Zone' All-inclusive, luxury hotels dominate the coastline, however a short distance away is 'Centro' which is home to the locals who serve the tourist industry. The hotel zone and tourist places are patrolled by the police and crime is rare in these areas, but always seek local advice from your travel rep. about the rsks. Note: Roads conditions can quickly deteriorate during the rainy season. This can lead to delays during airport transfers and problems for drivers. Days Out: Most of the local attractions are based around water sports - from jet skiing in the lagoon to snorkelling on the coral reef. A modern water park with slides, a wave lagoon, and 'lazy river' is located nearby while the ancient sites of Mexico are all within a few hours travelling distance. Beside a huge lake area known as Laguna Nichupté is a marina lined by restaurants and some exclusive shops. Several American-style malls provide all the essentials for shop-a-holics. Half-a-dozen golf courses are within easy reach of the hotel zone providing some stunning ocean views.
Nights Out An area known locally as the 'Party Zone' is rammed with all-night discos attracting hoardes of revellers from all around Cancún. Beaches: The beaches are all blessed with powdery white sand and cursed with traders peddling their wares. The texture of the sand makes it cool to walk on barefoot, even on the hottest days. On the nothern tip of Cancún the coast is fairly well protected from the elements so the beach tends to be shallow and ideal for bathing. Further south along the coast there are strong currents and often rough conditions. Warning flags operate. Bucket and Spade Brigade: Kids will love the beaches although care should be taken due to unpredictable sea conditions along the southern strip of coast. The water park on the edge of the hotel zone provides a good day out for youngsters. |
