What's it really like? Transfer time: Approx 30 minutes. Location: The local council has spent time and money working hard to shake off this resort's notorious past and our sources in the town tell us Benitses is better for it. This former harbour town has even retained some of the original fishermen's houses along the seafront and boasts a quaint 'village square'. The exodus of young revelers to Kavos has paved the way for families and couples seeking more mature pastimes like exploring the hills which form the backdrop. Although Benitses isn't featured in many British tour operator's brochures, August is a busy month when the resort welcomes Greek and Italian tourists. The main coastal road is often chaotic and care is needed crossing it to reach the beach. Beaches: Like most of its east coast neighbours Benitses' beaches are disappointing; two narrow strips of sharp pebbles, dissected by the harbour. In places the beach is almost non-existent. Plenty of water sports are available. Days out: Boat trips along the coast and to the island of Paxos. Unexciting Roman remains around the harbour and a shell museum in town. An abundance of souvenir shops and mini-markets offering the usual tourist fayre. Nights out: In keeping with the resort's new image many of the nighttime venues have been transformed into shops leaving just one nightclub and a handful of music bars - again the authorities have vigorously enforced a rule forcing bar owners to turn their sound systems down after midnight. A varied choice of cuisine. Bucket and Spade Brigade: The shingle beach and busy road may not suit every parent. |
