What's it really like? Transfer time: Approx 15 minutes Location: An upbeat family resort comprising low-rise apartments backed by pine-clad hills, Argassi has a modern village-like atmosphere which makes up for its lack of authentic architecture ( most of it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1953). An attempt has been made to stick to a theme in the construction of the buildings here, most of which have traditional red-tiled roofs. A generally laid back feel predominates supplemented by some lively evening action, well suited to young families and couples. Beaches: A long, narrow mix of sand and shingle, the sea here remains fairly shallow for some way out but litter and overcrowding are a problem. Better beaches can be found a short drive south towards Vassilikos. Watersports and fun rides available including jet-skis, ringoes and paragliding. Days out: Boat trips to the Blue Caves, Smuggler's Cove and in search of the famous turtles go from Zante town (approx.10 minutes away by car). It is also possible to take a longer journey to the Greek mainland taking in the famous sites of Athens. A large number of tourist shops and super markets but no great variety. Nights out: Some 15 or so bars, plus tavernas and a few nightclubs, even an internet café, mostly clustered along the two main streets. In this case 'lively' is a more accurate description of Argassi's nightlife than 'rowdy'. Laganas has brighter lights and more buzzin' sounds. Argassi has a vast choice of places to eat, mostly tourist tummy-fillers plus some Greek, Chinese and Indian. Bucket and Spade Brigade: The beach is very safe for children and gently shelving although the resort may be lacking a few essentials for more energetic kids. There are amusements galore in Laganas (approx. 15 minutes away by car) if you don't mind the youth culture there. |
