Arenal

What's it really like ?

Transfer time: Approx 15 minutes

Location:

Note: Building work expected. There are plans for a tram will link from Palma’s grand central station in the Plaza d’España to Can Pastilla where a link will branch off to Son San Juan Airport.

Apparently it's been agreed to locate an airport tram station cated to the far right of the arrivals coach and car park area outside the terminal.

Phase one of the project will see the tram running along the sea front to Can Pastilla via Coll den Rebassa and construction work could be getting underway early 2010.

Phase two of the project is the link from Can Pastilla to Arenal and rumours have already started circulating about a third phase to run a second main tram link in the opposite direction to Calvia.

There have been some improvements made to Arenal with a so-called 'Green Zone' on the site of two former hotels.

This new paved area boasts trees and flowers and is part of a long-term scheme to spruce the place up.

This resort is almost totally aimed at German visitors and  is unashamedly brash - boasting a banging nightlife and budget apartments.

There's a port area which is quite grim in places, however the coastal road has had a few euros spent on some landscaping.

Over the years the town has started to spread its neon-lit tentacles further west along the coast towards Palma creating quite a sizeable 'strip'.

The Balneario 6 ( a network of bars and clubs ) is very popular with young German tourists.

The selling point for families has to be the beach and its handy location for the island's other attractions nearby (see below).

Beaches:

A good, broad stretch of sand, lapped by a clean waters.

The beach is large enough to spare you some space if you head away from the main stretch, otherwise you'll be rubbing shoulders (and maybe suncream) with the thousands of others at peak times.

Every kind of watersport is available.

Days Out:

Arenal is the home of Europe's largest water park - Aquacity which is famous for slides like; the Black Hole and Kamikaze.

Golf and Go- karting are within easy reach.

Good bus links with Palma.

Nights Out:

Loads of OTT action here. A bar crawl could take a fortnight, or mad Magaluf is only 20 minutes away in a taxi.

If you're staying in the thick of it, don't expect an early night because the loud music and street noise goes on and on and on.

Eating out is mainly treated as a chore by most of the young visitors, hence the abundance of fast food establishments.

Bucket and Spade Brigade:

Beach babes will love it here, and all that theme park action is close at hand, too.

If your children are light sleepers, stay away from the centre.

It can get boisterous at night.
