What's it really like ? Transfer time (approx): 2 hours Location: A fishing village of character lies at the heart of the resort of Alvor with a wide selection of shops, bars and restaurants plus some interesting old buildings - fading memories of the past. Although the usual tourist shops and bars have spread throughout the village, inbetween those white-washed fishermen's homes is a rabbit warren of narrow cobbled streets. Meanwhile, banished to the outskirts of town is a cluster of holiday high-rises. A low-key resort which enjoys a laid back mood and a happy atmosphere, especially in the evening. Note: Alvor is quite a hilly resort and may not be suitable for the less mobile. Praia da Rocha is a short taxi ride Beaches: Backed by the Algarve's distinctive sandstone cliffs, Alvor's 4-mile-long stretch of golden, sandy beach is dotted with rock formations which have been sculpted by the sea, complete with tunnels and arches. Quiet areas away from the hub-bub can easily be found especially among the sand dunes. There's no shortage of facilities towards the resort centre and the sheer size of the beach can accommodate large numbers of people comfortably.
Days Out: Outside the resort is a marine park specializing in sea life shows, etc. plus a water park for thrill-seekers with all manner of slippery slides. Golfers are spoilt for choice either nearby or not far away along the Algarve. Shopping in the old section of town is a tour of discovery with more of the same in Praia da Rocha and a good-sized shopping centre at Portimao. Also available are Jeep safaris and various boats trips. Nights Out: Not a high concentration of bars compared to some resorts but Alvor isn't short on entertainment, either. A much greater choice, including discos, bars and casino can be found in Praia da Rocha and Portimao. There's a wide range of restaurants in the village offering every variety, including some Italian and Chinese - less commercialised than some and the high-street fast food joints haven't arrived here..yet! Younger visitors may find the nightlife, which consists mainly of 'live' music bars and karaoke, etc rather tame. Bucket and Spade Brigade: The local beaches, with their safe, clean sand in addition to the water parks make it a good choice for kids. |
