What's it really like? Transfer time: Approx 90 minutes Altinkum is a mainly modern resort of recently-built hotels and apartments set around a picturesque bay. It is very popular with British tourists and the catering and entertainment is geared towards them, except during the peak months when locals attempt to reclaim their territory back during the school holidays. There is still some building work here-and-there but we haven't had any complaints of noise or major disruption. A pedestrianised promenade is a magnet in the evening and leads to the more authentic side of town where local fishermen moor their bats and land their catches. Beaches: The main beach is huge expanse of gently-shelving sand is set in a sweeping bay with life gaurds on duty at peak times. It is possible to walk several hundred metres out to sea and still be standing in waist-high water. For those craving some peace and quiet away from the the crowds there are two smaller stretches of sand within walking distance. Some areas of the beach are cleaner than others and expect to be distracted by locals peddling their wares every so often. Water sports and boats trips along the coast are available locally. Days out: Nearby Ephesus dates back 2,000 years and the remains of this ancient city are swell-preserved. Didim with its roman ruins and Temple of Apollo is only three miles away. Trips to Kusadasi and Bodrum are also possible. For the more active jeep safaris offer a great adventure into the surrounding hills. There's no shortage of tourist shops scattered about the resort with a larger concentration in the centralised commercial area. Many of the shops along the seafront stay open past midnight. Nights out: The evenings can become pretty lively in places, especially in 'Dolphin Square' - but nothing too rowdy. Bars, restaurants and a few nightclubs provide a multitude of entertainment options after-dark. Freshly caught fish is always on the menu alongside the usual tourist fayre. Bucket and Spade Brigade: Altinkum provides a good beach-based holiday for youngsters. The sea is safe and sheltered and the local ruins are good for exploring, although be aware there isn't much shelter from the sun. There's also a fairground in town providing traditional rides and amusements. |
