What's it really like ? Transfer time (approx): 1 hour Location: A hilly resort ( worth bearing in mind for the less mobile ) which has clung on to its past, particularly around the main town where a maze of cobbled streets span outwards from the shady square. Most of the larger, modern hotels and apartment complexes have been banished to the outskirts, leaving the centre to languish in the past. Here, clusters of dazzling white fishermen's houses sit alongside quaint shops and cafés. At the height of the summer Albufeira's bright lights and nightlife attracts young singles. Mature visitors and families who're looking for a quieter retreat should choose their base with care. Beaches: The coast here remains remarkably unspoilt. Backed by a dramatic rock face, the beaches are clean and sandy - the only drawback being accessibility. Just off the town square is a tunnel carved through the cliff which leads to a steep flight of steps down to the sand. Lifeguards are on duty at peak times and water sports are available. Days Out: Because the majority of the hotels are situated well away from the resort centre, visitors may regard a trip to main beach as a 'day out'. Outside the resort is a marine park specializing in sea life, plus a water park for thrill-seekers with all manner of slippery slides. Golfers will have to travel to Vilamoura for the nearest courses (half an hour away). Shopping in the old section of town is a tour of discovery, with all requirements catered for while Faro - about an hour away, has this year become home to the Algarve's biggest shopping centre with more than a hundred stores, 20 restaurants and a hypermarket. Nights Out: Lots of open-air cafes and bars. Away from the old town the more modern areas are buzzing with clubs and nightlife particularly between June and September. Albufeira has a vast selection of restaurants, and because local fishing is still preserved as a way of life, the day's catches come highly recommended. For an alternative night on the town try the local cinema! Bucket and Spade Brigade: The local beaches, with their safe, clean sand in addition to the water parks make it a good choice for kids. |
