What's it really like? Transfer time: Approx 2 hours Location: Once given to Cleopatra by Mark Antony, Alanya has now become a gift to the tourist industry since a major expansion programme began towards the end of the 80's. Germans and Brits flock here in numbers drawn by miles of beach and extensive holiday amenities, however on closer inspection some of these 'attractions' are a little disappointing. The town suffers from heavy traffic along the main coastal road and vehicle noise could become irritating. Most of the more popular package holiday hotel complexes are out of town so check your brochure descriptions. The resort redeems itself with some excellent local historical sites and an unspoilt old town. Beaches: The beaches are gritty and in need of a more stringent cleaning programme. Course sand and often littered, Alanya's two beaches are separated by the promontory and look better in the brochures than in close-up. Watersports enthusiasts are well catered for. Days out: Alanya's showpiece is the ancient castle which dominates the promontory and is surrounded by the old town with its network of quaint streets. A hike or bus ride away, the castle offers superb views of the coastline as well as a chance to barter for a bargain. For once, boat trips from the harbour are a worthwhile pastime for there is much to see, including wild dolphins, caves and the beach where according to legend Cleopatra used to bathe. Those who like to rummage around ruins will enjoy the ancient theatre in Aspendos which was built 1800 years ago and is still in good shape. Nearby Perge boasts a Roman stadium and walled city. Golfers can choose between 3 courses all within motoring distance. Nights out: Dozens of bars, some providing nothing more than a chance to unwind, others boast some kind of entertainment, usually 'live' acts and karaoke. A sprinkling of clubs although Alanya is not on the 18-30 scene. The resort is rammed with restaurants catering for every tourist taste. Bucket and Spade Brigade: Alanya has a funfair with bouncy castle and rides, the large beach is safe with shallow waters and children will probably enjoy exploring the fortress. |
