What's it really like? Transfer time: Approx 45 minutes Location: Flattened by a devastating earthquake in 1960, Agadir has been rebuilt across two distinct areas; a commercial city and a tourist destination which co-exist in an impressive showpiece of modern development. Most visitors will be so impressed with the resort's amenities which equal anything Spain can offer, they will hardly notice the lack of authentic Moroccan culture. While some of the old customs do remain the locals have become much more western in their ways - functional and liberated. Low-rise hotels and holiday complexes hug the huge beach and thanks to some clever landscaping they blend in with the lush surroundings to create a spacious feel. Beaches: 10km of glorious sand which is kept clean and litter free by regular dawn sweeps. Mounted police are a common site patrolling the main tourist sections chiefly to reassure holidaymakers and keep traders at bay. The seafront is also served by several snack bars and a public swimming pool. A good range of Watersports are available. Note: there can be strong undercurrents in the sea so care is needed when swimming. Days out: Because of the earthquake, little of the old Agadir remains except for the Kasbah just outside the main resort centre. Away from the beach is the so-called 'Valley of the Birds' which attracts a large number of species. Also within striking distance is an impressive gorge known as 'Paradise Valley which is well worth exploring on foot, or for the more adventurous by donkey. Nearby Immouzer des Ida Outanane offers spectacular scenery enhanced by a waterfall and bird life. Agadir also has two fine golf courses on the edge of town. To fully enjoy the sites around Tunisia we recommend hiring a car. Nights out: Nightlife tends to be restricted to the hotels which provide dancing and entertainment. Restaurants serve many local dishes as well as the usual tourist tummy fillers. There's even a McDonalds. Bucket and Spade Brigade: Morocco's premier resort for kids, Agadir has a great beach but care should be taken in the sea due to strong undercurrents. For a change of scenery youngsters will enjoy a trip to the so-called 'Valley of the Birds' which has a playground, zoo and aviary all set in lush surroundings. |
