Acharavi/Roda What's it really like? Transfer time: Approx 90 minutes. Location: Backed by the surrounding Mount Pantokratoras, the scenery here is green and lush. These neighbouring resorts, linked by a frequent local bus provide an uncomplicated retreat for quiet-seekers. Roda has more of an authentic village atmosphere. Buildings are low-rise and well scattered, camouflaged by pine trees and olive groves. The main road around Roda can get noisy with scooters, and both towns suffer from a lack of footpaths. Some accommodation may be situated across the busy main road. Beaches: Acharavi has a mix of sand and pebble; it was awarded the Euro Blue Flag for cleanliness. Roda's beach is more shingle than sand and, occasionally, strong winds can whip-up the sea. Both offer some natural shade and a taverna or two. Watersports and parasols for hire. Days out: Boat trips to neighbouring beaches. Seafront walking and exploring the local mountainside. Trips to the top of Mount Pantokratoras provide spectacular views to Albania and, on the clearest of days - Italy! Another reward for reaching the summit is a monastery. Local buses link the two resorts (10 mins). Further afield; Corfu Town attracts sightseers and shoppers, while Aqualand offers wet-knuckle rides for all ages. Nights out: Low-key. A plentiful supply of tavernas, supplemented by a handful of music bars and one or two clubs; nothing rowdy. Roda also boasts some Chinese and Italian cuisine. Bucket and Spade Brigade: Acharavi has a superb beach for smaller children with good sand (pebbles in places). The coast is gently-shelving and clean. Both resorts are set on flat terrain, OK for buggies and the less mobile, but there are very few footpaths so care is needed on the main streets. 90 minutes by coach from the airport, along some hair-raising mountain roads may be too much for younger children. |
